WE don't believe we can become God. There is only 1 God with a capital G & that is God the Father in heaven. We believe we are gods (small g). Which is like God (big G) the Father but not equal to God (big G) the Father.

We believe that you must be baptized, with the proper authority, in the name of Jesus Christ. This authority is called the Aaronic Priesthood which was RESTORED to the earth by John, The Baptist. If you are not baptized by this proper authority we believe you can not reach the highest degree of glory or the Celestial Kingdom where God (big G) the Father resides & in essence can not become gods (little g) like Jesus quotes in the Bible.

WRAETH:
The scriptures do say that you may become gods. In the OT
THE BOOK OF PSALMS

PSALM 82:6

Thus saith the Lord: Ye are gods and children of the Most High.

1 God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
5 They know not, neither will they understand; they awalk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

In the Book of JOHN in the NT of the bible the Jews were going to stone Jesus for calling himself the Son of God & This was His reply: JOHN 10:32-38

32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself bGod.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

The scripture Jesus quoted to the Jews is Psalms 82:6.

Oh boy... There are some pretty interesting answers here... We Mormons believe in something called the Plan of Happiness, or Plan of Salvation (God's Plan). Part of this plan includes the righteous and faithful obtaining everything Heavenly Father has, including Godhood. But how can Men and Women become Gods and Goddesses like this? Let's put it this way. What can puppies become? Dogs. What can kittens become? Cats. What can the Children of God become? Now remember, this is pretty deep stuff, so if you want to know more, contact an OFFICIAL LDS source: lds.org, missionaries, current members, etc. It seems that most of these people that have already answered this question need to do a little research. I'm not knocking them, but still...

Actually, we don't believe that "any" Mormon can become A god (Nor above our God, Heavenly Father, EVER)...

Basically, we believe that since we are literally the offspring of God, our Heavenly Father (and Mother) and He is a God, we can ALL have the potential to become like Him. Anyone, not just Mormons. THOUGH, we do believe there are certain criteria and such that the Lord has set forth in order to obtain such a HUGE blessing. Also, in my own personal beliefs, I don't think it will be like "ok, you are a mormon, you are now a god"...I think it will be quite a process and will take lots and lots if not eons of time, which of course our minds cannot even grasp. We do not really have a lot of doctrine and are not taught this concept a lot basically because we just don't know more other than what has already been revealed...such as things in the scriptures talking about receiving all the Father has and becoming joint-heirs with Christ.
It is quite a deep subject that we just don't know that much about...I don't worry about it too much.

It sounds like you have Unity (becoming God or becoming one with God) confused with transformation into a Deity.

Either that or your wording is fuzzy and open to misinterpretation.

"Becoming God" and "becoming A God" are not the same thing!

Unity is not only a Mormon belief. You will find that the path of "Unity with God" or "Unity with the Absolute" exists in EVERY religion:

Christianity,
Judaism,
Islam,
Taoism,
Buddhism,
Hinduism,
Shintoism,
Nature religions,
Tribal religions
all of them.

To directly answer your question, mormon men do believe that if they are faithful, temple-going tithe-paying worthy members who enter into the eternal covenant of marriage (one or more wives 'sealed' for time and eternity, make become 'like gods'.

Present mormons like to split hairs saying the 'key' word is 'like', meaning 'not really', but for the half century I attended it meant *exactly like* god is now - and our god apparently gets promoted to the next level.

This would indicate that our god has his own god he must obey and sing praises to also. Where does he find the time to horse with us? This theology has never really been discussed to it's conclusion.

So, convert from whatever you are, accept the outrageous claims mormons make, pay the 10% temple tax and give most of your free time to the church, and you could have your own galaxy and a harem of ever-pregnant wives.

Well, we don't. We don't think that anyone can be God.
We try to be like jesus and follow in his ways. We don't call ourselves gods. I don't know where you heard that.
