9/9/09 On Sept the 9th at 9 PM to turn your lights off for 9 minutes? To get the governments attention to “take these quacks seriously” You might ask how and why would anyone take someone sitting in the dark seriously? I cant answer that, makes no since to me ether. But they say this will save the world. Have you ever heard of such insanity? How many kids brainwashed by this kind of propaganda will go into life with a doom and gloom outlook due to this kind of insanity? So as an alliterative, I invite you to join with me. Together we can light up the planet so it can be seen from Jupiter. Turn on every light, turn on every a/c unit and open the doors, even crank up the cars and turn the headlights on bright. Will you join with our movement to make these nuts shine in the dark? Together we can make a difference.

What is funny is that if everyone in the US actually did this, when everyone turns the lights/AC/heaters/etc back on, it will cause BLACKOUTS. And then the lights will be off much longer than 9 minutes. The system can not handle large, quick changes in electrical demand.

Hopefully the electrical distribution system will be very lightly loaded at the time. It's like the idea for everyone to not buy gas on some day. The previous day will have a larger demand and the boycott day will have none (causing inventory to go up) but then the next day will have higher than normal demand again and everything will be normal except for a few gas stations that cannot keep large inventories on site.

Turning off the lights for nine minutes will not save the planet, no. But seriously, people need to actually start thinking for once. Even if the planet is not being destroyed by our waste, what about all the people with deceases caused by pollution? Cancer? Asthma? Shouldn't we try and and stop this, is anything? I don't think anyone is going to turn out the lights, but you will probably be alone in turning them on, too. Nothing is going to change. It never has. We need a stronger movement than nine minutes of darkness to help the world's people, and we need to start taking this seriously.

Sad as your post is, the question is a legitimate one. What good do symbolic gestures do for a cause? This one looks like it is aimed at the children to show that people acting together can create an effect. It leads right into the knowledge that those effects are not always altogether good. It's all up to the people.

This is the reason nothing gets accomplished today. For every person that has an idea, someone else has to counter it. It's like congress.

You sound like those people that say "for every animal you don't eat I'm going to eat three" to vegetarians. What does that really do? Maybe this person's idea isn't a good one, but trying to counter it in such an immature fashion is even worse.

Your right. Maybe it won't be taken seriously. Maybe it won't save the planet, but maybe the idea is to get people to start thinking about the problem. Speaking of thinking, Alleninthehills have you ever considered turning on your spell checker or just proof read you answers before you post them.

Seems that the madman is speaking about madness !!!

Seriously you are just as insane as these insane people launching an insane proposal.

Have you ever heard of peak power demand and the consequences ? Do you know what a sudden drop in the electricity consumption does ?

Just use electricity normally and try to save it along the year !
