Im just wondering how the church explains things such as lucy, dinosaur fossils, and the world being billion of years old.

We don't. The age of the earth & the universe is not as important as the message of the cross.
I argue in favor of a young earth.......but does it really matter how old or young it is? Not at all.......what matters most is that the gospel message is being presented with the love of Christ

There is no evidence that lucy is anything more than another ancient ape species. As far as dino fossils and the age of the world goes science would have to stop denying the world wide flood to truly understand those.

Depends on which church. The Catholic church's position all but endorses evolution. They don't take the Genesis story literally.
Many others just flat out deny the facts. That leads to things at the Creation Museum like this.

God created dinosaurs and put them in the earth layers so that we can praise His awesomeness.

They say that these are just more creations of god to challenge our sensibilities. Without stuff like that, god would be just too easy to believe in. "He" wants to make the story so absurd that only a complete moron would believe in the retarded story. "He" appears to be succeeding.

The bible talks about dinosaurs
and we only believe the world was created in 6000 years, not that it's only 6000 years old....

Dating Methods are inaccurate and/or god placed them there to test your faith etc.
