There must be someone or something that is teaching him this. At ten years no child will have such an urge or thought independently. Concentrate on eliminating those sources now. The source may be a friend (especially watch for older friends), the computer or TV (parental controls!), or/and some books that he somehow got a hold of. Do not do anything rash or obvious. Please keep an eye on him, observe him and his behavior, then you may come to a conclusion. I doubt he really knows what he is doing at this age, so stay away from "the talk." You will only be teaching him things that he may not yet know. Do not forget about this (being a parent--it will hurt), just keep up with his activies daily. He's growing sooner that one would anticipate.
P.S. ADVICE is a noun, ADVISE is the verb. You want to advise, not advice.

Now is a fine time for a discussion about the facts of life and privacy. Get him a good book for reference, explain what you can, give him the opportunity to ask questions and make sure he understands what he needs to know. If you look on this website, you will see dozens of questions that show kids are not getting enough appropriate information to understand how their own bodies work. This is so dangerous and a leading cause of teen pregnancy, parenthood and STDs. Good luck!

I remember in Health Class some statistic that said that 1/3rd of people do it or some high statistic. Any way, below is a link where you can find 3 advice articles about kids masturbating and how to deal with it as a parent.

First of all masturbating at that age is absolutely normal.I would suggest that you shouldn't tell your son that you actually saw him doing it cause he will probably feel embarrased.Try to open a general conversation and bring the subject on the table at a point.Don't force him to speak to you if he doesn't want to...he will do when he will be ready.
Good luck :)

Its perfectly normal for a child of that age to be discovering himeslf. More importantly you should not try to act shocked, it would be bad if you make him feel like he did something wrong or embarassed. If it were my son, I think I would have the 'talk " with him if you have not done so already.

advice to him?
He is 10 years old, and deserves privacy.
Privacy in his own room, privacy in the restroom.
So long as he is not doing this in public, or in front of anyone else in the house, there is no advice to give.
the only advice I can think of is to communicate with him and make sure he is clear no one else is to touch him or see him naked.
Otherwise there is no cause for concern, or your involvement.

Just let him know its a normal thing to do and everyone does it and he wont grow hairy palms or go blind as thats all horse poop.
But best done in private with regular putting sheets in the wash unless with a girlfriend in which he should not be doing stuff like that with her for 5 years or more.
Thats guys like po***rn and pictures of naked ladies as they do it or thinking about girls they like.
And that girls go it to i their way prefering things that vibrate to p**orn but do like pictures of boy bands and tv stars with big muscelss just like gys like boobs.
Also a good oppertuntity to practice with condoms.

Just ignore. It is a growing symptom from childhood.
Ensure that he is not alone other than in his bath and toilet and do not talk of it
we all did and have had parents catching us one time or the other. they ignored and the issue got closed then and there

I don't think he needs advice. He probably has his own technique. I would be concerned if he was tieing himselp up or watching old Nazi propaganda films while doing it or something like that! But don't embarass him.
