In terms of Nationality, they are known as Thai. But in terms of ethnicity (or race), they may not be all Thai. There are several ethnic groups who reside in Thailand including the Chinese, Isan and various hill tribes.

Thailander is probably a more modern phrase given by foreigners and is generally not recognised in Thailand or in its surrounding region. The official term is still Thai.

Thai people and as one said the old name known to even African and Arabs is Siamese. In the sixties I heard Siamese not Thai and their land was Siam. This could be easily referenced in the Sinbad stories, as far as I know.
