Mohammad's SAW disciples do not broke off. This crisis was created long after by terrorist khawarij, who were new muslim without any deep knowledge of Islam. They never disagreed or fought. In the time of Alis caliphate there was some fight because of misunderstanding.
Secondly disciples of Mohammad SAW became kings after him and there are alway some problems in government but they never disagreed on any religious matter.
We being muslim love disciples of Jesus pbuh. They found less problems because they were just sent to their own Israel tribe and they were poor men. And still they lost the religion and it was changed to other type against the teaching of Jesus pbuh. So all their efforts went vain.

Well, not that the Mohammedans are better or anything but the Christians DID split eventually. I think if these two religions got together they could hate women and everyone else with a degree of hatred never before seen in the world.
I think its the similarities of the religions which are important.
Mohamed was an over rated moron and so was Jesus; they have no place in our culture these days. So, those are things they have going for them!

They were splited on a political issue of leadership (Khilafat). This issue was resolved in favour of Abu Bakar Siddiqe the same day and at same place in Medina - Saqifa Banu Saada. They were all united in faith.

Muslims remained united and they conquered more than half of the known world of that time within 30 years after Muhammad (SAW) passed on, today Islam is the second largest religion, and is the largest religion of the world in practice.
The split of Sunni or Shiat is due to difference in opinion in interpretation, yet the Quran and Hadith remained intact.
The difference of opinion will also vanish away once Jesus (PBUH) will come back to join us and muslims will restore peace on earth once again, I wish you live that long to witness that.

how are u saying that this didn't happen with Jesus, while there are four different copies of the bible in the USA????
At least true Muslims remained unchanged, we didn't (accommodate) our Qur'an!

I guess you better go and finish reading your book. His "disciples" didn't break away at all. In fact, Islam got even stronger. Yes they did divide into different groups but it wasn't because of lack of faith. It was due more to political influences at that time.

your right. it took about 500 years for the Christians to break off into two major sects. Orhtodox and Catholic. Then another 1000 before the Protestants and Catholics went at it.

well there was a lot of turmoil after muhammad died...mainly because Muhammad's friends fought over the women Muhammad left behind...why not? he had 60 wives...i heard this on TV from a Sheikh...by the way...
