What is the correct etiquette? My friend says I'm a philistine for using white sugar in coffee but I told her that in Italy (which is the home of good coffee) all Italians use white sugar in their coffee. If you are given brown sugar with your coffee in Italy, they know you are a tourist!

I think the use of certain sugars, be it by color or if artificial, matters on needs first and taste second. Needs as in if you are diabetic or other such health related diet.

If you don't have a special health need, then it just goes on taste. The easiest way to figure it out is to grab a package of each, like from a coffee shop or a restaurant, and try a lil bit. You will see some are real sweet. And others have their own twist on tasting sweet. Sugar substitute Splenda takes way less quantity to sweeten food compared to regular sugar.

Once you have figured out which sugars you like, brown-white-artificial, then look at their nutritional information online or on their packages at the grocery store.

Well..white sugar is considered to be processed sugar and brown sugar is more of the original cane sugar....so technically...yes, brown sugar should be better to be used not only in your coffee but also in anything you drink or eat solely for health purpose...

Neither. if its good coffee, you shouldn't need sugar.....if it is terrible coffee then brown is a better complimenting sugar as it is slightly more bitter and suits coffee more than white...

Typically, white sugar is used. I've never heard of brown sugar being used, but that actually sounds good. YOu should give it a try.

Don't be misled, most "brown sugar" is white sugar which is then made "brown".

If you take everything in moderation, then you need not worry how bad sugar may be for you (excess of anything is bad for you).

you should use brown sugar because the flavour is specially formulated with caramel extracts for hot foods and drinks it also dissolves more easily and tastes better with coffee.

Hope this helps (",)x

Well, white sugar is probably more tastier!

really no sugar is best, but if so, then brown. it's not as refined and still contain traces of nutritional value (not much though). if you have to have it, have it; avoid fake sweeteners of any kind.
