I have a 2002 Nissan Altima which has over 150,000 miles on it. I noticed a lot of knocking and pinging when I hit the accelerator. This happens after the car has been on the road for maybe 15 minutes. When the car is in stop, it runs fine, only when I put my foot on the gas is when I hear those noises. Per the manual, I only put 87 octane in, should I maybe be putting a higher octane in or is there something else I can do besides taking it to a dealer. Thanks

I had taken my car to the dealership to get something fixed, the dealership did the oil change but they didnt put the high mileage oil in, could that be the problem?

This is a v4-2.5 liter engine. It says 87 octane in the owners manual. Guess I will try the carbon cleaner, Thanks

I t sounds like you have carbon buildup on your pistons causing valve knock, there are many types of carbon build-up removers sold at parts stores and if it is the problem it is caused from low quality gas and sometimes the oil we use.Generally synthetic oils do lots better at keeping the engine cleaner.Good luck to you.

Try a couple tanks of carbon cleaner or Chevron Techron "my favorite" If this is a V-6 3.5 liter engine you failed to tell me! you would run better with premium fuel. The cost difference should be made up with greater fuel economy. And that plastic folder inthe glove box with that paperback book inside? You know the owners manual! please take time to read it section #9 on fluids and fuels

Nissan sells a fuel injector cleaner that you can buy and put in the gas tank. That one goes for $22 in my city. You can also purchase the one to put in engine oil when they change your oil, they will not let you take this one home. Suggestion: on the gas-tank one, put it in when the gas is half full and then bump up gas to full.
Try it, it worked wonders for me.
