When you need to get away from the korean korea, stop by Gecko's Terrace in Itaewon. It's a hub of expatriate activity and there's a lot of excellent intl restaurants along there and a block off. I used to love a few of the Italian-ish places and Moghuls, a paki/indian restaurant.

Define cool.
"Cool" like a tourist event you would want to see if you only came to Korea once in your life? Then I would eat at SAnchon in Insa-dong, very famous tourist restaurant, where you will be served 30 different temple food dishes and be treated to a traditional Korean performance if you go during dinner. (no lunch show)
"Cool" like you are taking a date? Then I would go to Top of the Cloud in the Jong-no Building, near to Insa-dong, which looks out over the city and includes a catwalk 40 stories up. (whole place is made of glass..very cool, except I was slightly nauseated from the fast elevator ride up)
Are you a tourist or do you live here?
There are a ton of chain coffee houses and cafes// all seem the same. Pause Cafe seems to stick out with their multi-layered/colored drinks.. but they are also a chain.

If you are coming soon, starting on august 15th, through the end of the month is the Hongdae Fringe FEstival.. very cool. Artsy-student area.. will have street performers/ buskers all day/night on teh weekends and all types of performance artists. Hongdae, (short for Honggik University, on line #2/circle line), is the hottest club area in general for anyone in their 20s-early 30's. (after that, you like like someone's parent)
