Most Kings back then (anytime, really) wanted to make it very clear to everyone that they were in control. King Arthur felt that the best way to lead was to pick good, solid people to be around him and to truly listen to their input. He knew that people wouldn't provide open and honest input if they felt inequal. So, when they were sitting at the round table discussing things, all of their voices/opinions were equal.
