For those of you who have run them, what's your heart rate average at for a fast 5k?

My heart rate when I am running is unusually high. Mine would be around 170-180.

Tricky question. One's heart rate actually depends on his age. Typically your Max HR can be estimated as 220 - your age.

I usually strive for these goals:
70%-85% of Max HR when training.
85%-90% of max HR when racing. Toward the end of a 5K race (when sprinting), I may get close to 95% of Max HR.

So for me as a 25 yr old:
Race Max HR could be as high as 185, but typically about 180.

Adding hills to a workout can help both the legs and the HR. Good Luck...
