There are so many reasons that could cause it so it will be hard to determine that straight away. Are you even sure it is excema as there are so many other infections that have almost exactly the same symptoms - the only way to tell is to get your doctor/Gp to take a scraping and have it tested as just looking at it can still get you a wrong diagnosis. This could also tell you what type of eczema it is if it is eczema at all!
If it gets really sore and you haven't been to the doctors yet then apply some milk to cotton wool and gently apply to the area - milk is a natural soothing agent and i always recommend people use this on babys and young children instead of steriod cream that are usually prescribed (obviously unless th ey are really suffering then steriods may be the only answer - personally i just think it does more long term harm).

Before anyone asks, im only a beauty therapist so i know the basics of many of these skin conditions but obviousy your best source of info is your GP.

I hope that helps a bit!

http://www.webmd.com/allergies/tc/Atopic-Dermatitis-Cause

This website has good information about this ONE type of eczema. aka atopic dermatitis

Itching and rash can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

Exposure to allergens, such as pollen, animal dander, or molds. Dust mites may be an allergen, although experts don't know whether they affect atopic dermatitis.
Exposure to irritants, such as using soaps, rubbing the skin, and wearing wool.
Exposure to workplace irritants, such as fumes and chemicals.
Climate factors, especially winter weather and low humidity. Cold air does not contain much moisture, which can result in drier skin and increased itchiness.
Temperature changes. Sudden changes in temperature can result in increased itchiness. A suddenly higher temperature may bring on sweating, which can cause itching. Lying under blankets, entering a warm room, or going from a warm shower into colder air can all promote itching.
Emotional stress. Emotions such as frustration or embarrassment may lead to increased itchiness and scratching.
Exposure to certain foods, typically eggs, peanuts, milk, soy, or wheat products. Up to 40% of children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis also have some type of food allergy.2 But experts do not agree on whether foods can cause atopic dermatitis.
Excessive washing. Repeated washing dries out the top layer of skin, leading to drier skin and increased itchiness, especially in the winter months when humidity is low.

you can develop allergies at any point in your life- your body just says- I've had enough of that particular substance. If it affecting you badly ,which it sounds like it is, I would go visit your doctor soon for help as to how to manage it and find out waht is causing it. IT might be something you're eating, or a shower gel or something.

The excema causes vary, and depend on the particular type of excema that a person has. Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis are the two major excema types ...........

On a personal note, my son has excema and suffers badly, he uses a barrier cream called DIPROBASE available from his doctor via a perscription. I hope you get some relief soon hun x
