I have just started swimming to help me lose weight (also do weightwatchers) and to tone up. I do 20-25 lengths (about 30-40mins) breast stroke 3 times per week (also go to the gym for 45 mins 1-2 times per week). How effective is swimming and which is the best stroke to do?

Very effective - its a great all over workout and also because it is supported, it doesn't hurt the knees or hips.

Try adding a few lengths of front crawl - whilst breast stroke is great (if done properly) crawl uses more calories!!

EDIT : And DON'T eat the exercise points!!!! Just forget they exist!

Swimming only takes second place to running and sex as the best forms of exercise, so good choice.

Swimming is great, but mix it up with some front crawl too. If not, over time you'll develop your chest muscles but breaststroke negates the triceps and lower back a little. A few lengths of front crawl will see you right.

Swimming is great cardiovascular, so when you go to the gym, hit the machines that work you out harder, the rower is the best weight loss and muscle gain machine, but it is of course bleedin hard to do it in great effort. Also, make an effort to go on the fly press and chest press. These are great for sorting out your upper body and improving our swimming.

By the way, if you find weight watchers doesn't work, try switching to slimming world, as it allows you more carbs, essential if your going to be exercising.

Congrats on starting a diet and going to the gym, keep it up!

Swimming is a great exercise has non impact on the joints. Breast stroke is good, but front crawl is better.

You sound like you will be on you way very quickly getting to your goal weight with all your exercise.

Weight watchers is a great diet. I know I have lost 4 stone doing the same as you by swimming and joining a gym. The results are absolutely amazing. I wish you all the very best of luck.

Swimming Is fab for losing weight & toning...I would 'always' suggest swimming as it keeps you fit but is easy on the joints at the same time!

I would say either the Front Stroke or Breast Stroke! The front stoke may do a little more as you'll be working harder!

All the best

Swimming is primarily an aerobic exercise due to the long exercise time, requiring a constant oxygen supply to the muscles, except for short sprints where the muscles work anaerobically. As with most aerobic exercise it is believed to reduce the harmful effects of stress. Swimming can improve posture and develop a strong lean physique

Swimming is recognised as one if not the only exercise that uses all the muscles...it is good for toning the body and improving you cardio vascular rate,,,,,,the best to do for long term exercise is the breast stroke as you can go for a very long time without over tyring yourself....

Swimming is a great exercise because you are using all the muscles in your body at the same time. The only exercise other that even comes close is sex-ercise he-he.

I have heard that swimming is good, but it may cause you to gain weight. This will not be fat though, it will be muscle. Check out the website below for some more information. Hope everything goes well.

swimming is excellent exercise, one of the best. If i were you I'd do as much of the front crawl. not only does it burn the most calories, but it work the majority of the muscles you are trying to tone
