I am departing this week on Northwest Airlines from the new Bangkok airport. Is there still a 500 baht tax?

No, it is 700 baht, but nowadays airlines (usually) include this airport tax in the ticket price.
You should confirm this with Northwest or with your travel agent.

I spent 20 minutes walking around looking for a place to pay the 500 baht fine that I had always had to pay previously, and I can tell you for certain that it's now included in the price of your airline ticket. So no, you do not.

when i left in march i had to pay the tax at the airline ticket counter at check-in. there where girls with coupons book that sold them walking around the terminal. can't remember if it was 500 or 700. i think some airlines included it into the ticket. but when i flew on northwest back home about two years ago i still had to pay. i usually stash a 1000bht away just to be safe.

African Farmer is right, it is now 700 baht and is included with the price of your ticket, they don't even have the departure tax booths or machines there anymore.
