If you look at a German-English dictionary, the German word "Panzer" means the same thing as the English word "Armor".

Part of the confusion is that we generally refer to German tanks as "Panzers", because that is shorter than saying the full name -- Panzerkampfwagen (abbreviated as PzKw) -- which translates into Armored Fighting Vehicle.
