What sort of ointment should I use? What is the best lotion to use after it's healed? What's the best way to keep it from losing it's color?

If your tattooist is reputable, he/she
should have told you what to use.
After it is completely healed, just put
suntan lotion on it, so the sun won't
fade it and you should be good to go.

I was given A&D ointment after my 4th tattoo, and told to use Lubriderm after my second tattoo, both worked very well. Just use any kind of lotion after it is healed, just as long as your skin is hydrated. You could also buy from a tattoo shop tattoo goo, that can be used while healing too, I use it on my tats now too. The best way to keep it from losing color: don't expose it to the sun unprotected, that is the best way to fade a tat. Your tat will normally lose some of it's brightness in the healing process, as the first layer of skin has now been damaged and will fall off. But it is not a significant amount, and if you want the colors to be more vibrant, then you could always go back for retouching after it has healed. Good Luck.

My friend who is a tattoo artist usually recommends using A&D ointment while the skin is raw and healing; after that, any lotion is acceptable, particularly non-oily ones. The best way that I know of for a tattoo to keep its color is to keep it well-hydrated and try not to over-rub/wash it.

Well.. I've got four tattooes so far, and I've always been told NOT to put lotions/ointments etc on them when they're healing.. I never have and mine look fine... I was always told just to use a mild soap like soft soap, and a soft wet cloth to "clean" it.. I don't really know how to keep it from losing its color.. as far as I know, they do over time anyway and I personally think alot of the fading stems from who does it and how experienced they are etc... Good luck and congrats on the new ink

to stop it fading make sure u always protect it from the sun, put loads of sun cream on it,

Dial anti-bacterial soap 3-4 times a day, dry with a paper towel by dabbing tattoo.

Apply thin coat of Aquaphor and dab excess off with paper towel.

Quick showers; no sun; no swimming for two weeks. Sunscreen afterwards
No itching.

A+D ointment is the best stuff to use, period. It has kept all four of mine from fading or my skin from pelling. When I don't use it, my skin feels like dried leather.
