According to just one search on www.ancestry.com, in the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957, the name Lassi comes from HUNGARY, FINLAND, RUSSIA, SWEDEN, N. and S. ITALY, ESTONIA, ALBANIA, & GERMANY.

Sorry... you have fallen prey to the most common misunderstanding we have in this area.
Surnames do not have nationalities. IE Jones can come from MANY different places.. same with Gonzalez, or any other name. Your name MIGHT be "common" in one country.. but that is a generalization. Just as Caldwell may come from any part of the United States.
There is no correct location... or incorrect location. IF you have a grandfather Lassi, you need to verify his place of birth. If your ANCESTOR comes from Italy, the person is Italian. Not the name.

Most probably southern Italy.

The northern part that borders France derived the "De" as is De Gallo, and De Luca. "De" meaning "from" in French.

Most others are from the central to soutern part of Italy.
