Don't get a German Shepherd unless someone in their house really knows what they're doing. Plus it is tough to get a good one. Most German Shepherds in the States are not a good choice. JMO

If you ignore my advice and decide to go with a GSD, make sure you get a laid-back working line dog with rock solid nerves. USA (the organization) has the best contacts for German Shepherds in the States.

Boxers are cool dogs and you can find some (mostly showline) that have the temprerament of a Golden Retreiver. I've seen some awesome boxers in schutzhund, but they are few and far inbetween and cost $$$.

I'm a schutzhund trainer and I've seen a lot of really good German Shepherds, but most peolpe are not dog savy enough to handle these dogs.

I've never owned a German Shephard, but I do own a boxer. I love boxers. All the boxers I have ever come in contact with have great temperments. My mom also breeds and shows them. They are very energetic, so a fenced in yard is best. They need lots of exercise. But, they are loving and very loyal. My male is a guardian. He is very very friendly but I know if someone attacked me , he would defend me. I know this b/c my husband is going for his blackbelt and has shown me a few moves. My boxer was confused and thought my husband was attacking me and he tried to bite my hubby in the leg a few times. I love the boxer breed and I highly recommend them. Just be prepared for the high energy.

I have both a German Shepherd and a Boxer. I prefer Buck (the german shepherd) over Josey (our boxer), just because he is alot more laid back and always has been. Boxers are very hyper. Josey is now 5 years old and is just starting to settle down, she is a good dog, but when she was a puppy she was sooo hyper that you couldnt keep her attention long enough to train her very well so it took forever. If your sister has a lot of energy, then go for the boxer but if she likes dogs with alittle less energy then I would say the german shepherd. German Shepherds can be alittle wired when they are puppies but they calm down quicker than boxers.

I've owned both and both breeds are very active and need a big yard and a lot of exercise. GSD's are very protective. and boxers are just hyper. but i would seriously let you sister pick out the dog. spend time with both breeds and see which one you like best. also go to the pound. and call rescue groups. also read up on both breeds GSD's have hip problems. so you really need to find a very good breeder.

boxers are by far the better companion dog.
they are sweet and loyal and great with kids. they LOVE to cuddle. german shepards tend to be a bit off sometimes. they can have mental problems due to over breeding. they can be aggressive. im not saying theyre all like that but the breed has some issues. boxers have their own heath problems like every breed, but they are physical. they have a tendency to get arthritis when theyre old but that is far over shadowed by the boxers sweet disposition. they are good watch dogs but not vicious. both breeds need a good amount of attention. they are so sweet ive had 2 in my life time. they were they best friends i cud ever ask for. when ever i was having a bad day it was like they cud tell and came over to cheer me up. great personalities each boxer has theyre own quirky personality. love to play they are natural clowns. love people. did i mention they LOVE to cuddle?

i'm getting scared whilst i'm strolling and are available the process a extensive dogs it rather is loose, despite if it rather is a breed with a good recognition like a Golden or Lab, in basic terms because of the fact it scares me no longer understanding if it rather is a sturdy dogs or no longer. some canines could have themes despite if the breed is regularly friendly, in basic terms like breeds with undesirable reputations could be great, that's all interior the way the dogs has been knowledgeable and taken care of. i've got popular a Samoyed who became happy along with his vendors yet no person else. He became a biter, territorial, and temperamental, yet he appeared great friendly till to procure on the fringe of him. it rather is why unusual canines scare me, you in basic terms on no account understand.

Boxers. Shepherds are a herding breed-they need a job to do. I prefer a dog with the beautiful muscling like the Boxer. Ever seen a full-grown Boxer in the show ring? They are gorgeous. I love their chest, once it has filled out. Beautiful dogs, beautiful movement.

Most GSD's in the show ring, these days, have an over-angulated rear. Especially here in the U.S. Not all do, but many of them.

Women like a secure feeling and no dog can provide this better then a German Shepherd from Good Bloodlines. I have had several types of dogs through my life including bull dogs which boxers are in the family of and I have return and will forever more be a devout German Shepherd owner. I have two now one is a German Import and even puts the American breed of German Shepherds to shame. Bottom line is this, for the German Shepherd it's family is it's herd of sheep and will die protecting them. They can be as social or anti-social which I prefer as the owner wants them to be. Great with children but not an animal to abuse. They gentle train which means you only have to be smart enough to convey what it is you want from your Shepherd and he/she will comply as they live to please their master. Mine are raised inside, sleep in bed with by wife and I and will answer simple yes and no questions giving the right paw for yes and the left paw for no. They are best kept as solely the families dog if you want protection which comes naturally to them and requires no special training...the more love you give and more you will get...oh and did I mention they don't slobber all over everything? For my wife these are her first experiance with Shepherds and she just tonight was pointing out how she has never owned another dog the went so far showing her how much she is loved by her dog. Pick the Shepherd and she will never regret it...but get it young, kennel train it indoors and read all you can about the breed. Reward it with treats for going pots outside...don't rub their nose in it, merely show disapproval is all that is nessasary. If you are really interested in a Good line of Shepherd the breeder I bought from has I litter coming in September from a beauitful female of direct German bloodlines...tell Melanie Richard refered you and she will do you well I'm sure. VomFelsenHof@aol.com I myself will likely get another female from this litter.

Personally I don't think any breed is better than another breed. Each breed has their own special traits. You need to pick the best dog for your sister's lifestyle. Make sure those are her two favorite breeds and pick based on availability, price, and location.

shepherds are great dogs if brought up right and around ppl and children so they get used to being around them as they grow...my sister had a shepherd for many yrs and she was a great family dog...boxers are good too but they are so hyper, in my opinion, and I know ppl that agree....don't believe ppl that say that a shepherd can turn on you later...it depends on the way its raised from the beginning....I would also want to see and visit with the parents of the pup you get to see how their temperments are...that makes a difference too...good luck!
