Boy thank you for asking such an important question that makes me think deep inside.
Being a martial artist was one of the the best choices I made as a young man. I was a very negative person and I was always getting into trouble,. Along with my faith Martial arts gave me direction and structure helped me get the stregh to overcome and defeat my personal inner demons and turned my life around and become positive member of society , a better role model for my kids , friends and students I will plan to practice and study for the rest of my life.
it is also about humility, compassion and kindness. It causes me to pause and ask in prayer nightly to always remember . The hard work, kindness, dedication, discipline and learning it took others before myself (my teachers) and how thankful I am;0) I also realize the more I keep learning the more there is to learn.
I have been taught to care about people in a positive way with an positive attitude, and to exhibit kindness and compassion
Have a great night,(you have made my night)

First off, congrats on the purple. I started taking martial arts when I was in my early teens. I had a really bad temper, and I lived in a rough area. I probably started taking Kenpo for the wrong reasons, but after I was in it for a while I started to understand and really connect with the spiritual side of the art. Believe it or not, the opposite of what I thought would happen...happened. I calmed way down, and hardly fought at all. Just knowing what I was capable of gave me the confidence to have peace and not constantly try to prove what a bad *** I was. Long story short I began teaching young children in the neighborhood who could not afford, or find a way to a school. I think martial arts are so much more than just punches and kicks. Hope that helps..

At first, the martial arts meant I could kick butt like my idols in the movies. After joining, I started learning a whole new skill set and met some of the most important people in my life.
So what it means now is getting to know yourself better, getting to know others better and learning something that not only helps you to be more fit, confident and resourceful in tricky situations, but also helped better myself in many ways, especially through teaching.
For my first black belt ranking, we didn't write a test but we did have to stand in front of high ranking black belts (after seven hours of "doing our thing") and answer questions about every facet of our style of Martial Art. Thing is, if you love it, it is easy to know it. You'll do fine!!

Martial arts has prepared me for life. I am only a white belt. I have 3 red stripes on my belt. And Each time i achieve my
stripes I work harder and harder to get to my goal. And that is to be a HTF Instructor. I practice every day. No matter if I have class. After class I practice my kicks, punches, and blocks.
Currently I am learning my form. And Learning my form has made me come closer to being tested for my yellow belt.

For everything in martial arts there is a parallel in life, often many parallels. Martial arts is not simply the study of fighting, it is the study of everything. It is a moving meditation, a process of understanding with more and more clarity everything around us and everything within us.
I study martial arts to continually sharpen my skills, strengthen my body, develop my mind and understand myself. When I understand myself everything else becomes clear. Peace is about understanding. Love is about peace. Happiness is about love. Martial arts isn't about fighting. It never was.

Martial arts to me is a way of life. It's a path for physical, spiritual, and mental growth. By studying martial arts, I've overcome athsma and I've been able to defend myself in situations that, without it, I would likely have not been able to make it out of.

Martial Arts to me is the mastery of one's body and mind. Mastery is ability to express yourself truthfully, and efficiently in a combat. If you don't see or understand the beauty of two skilled combatants testing their hard work and guts against each other, then don't call yourself a martial artist...
