You buy a glass aquarium (like one used for a fishtank). You get a wire lid with cage clips, so he can't chew thru it. They are very easy to clean. They are not as colorful as those plasic ones, but you can add hidey homes, wheels, larger water bottles, and other accesories. It gives the hamster more room to run around, plus the hamster cannot chew thru and destroy the glass and metal wire lid.

sidenote: Other people have suggested not buying this type of cage because of venthilation problems. There should be no problem because the top is open, only covered by wire mesh. It was also suggested that those cages do not let the fumes from cedar chips out... You should NOT be using cedar or pine chips for hamsters, whether you have a glass aquarium or a wire cage. They do emit harmful fumes and can make a hamster very sick... There are plenty of other bedding alternatives that can be used, including, aspen shavings, recycled newspaper pellets (like the product Yesterday's News), and there are many other beddings specially labeled for use with small animals that you can find in your local pet store. If you find yourself in need of bedding without being able to get to the store, you can always find a newspaper (only use the regular mostly black and white pages, not the colorful, glued, or stapled coupons and advertisement sections), tear it up into smaller strips, and use that as bedding too.

I also attached a website about hamster care. It should be able to answer a lot of your questions if you're thinking about buying your 1st hamster. It's a really good website. It's educational, but they have a lot of fun stuff there too.

Good luck!!!

The people who answered are correct. It's either a glass fish tank or a plastic container with holes in the top that some people sometimes use.
I DO NOT recommend this type of cage. You should buy one that is specifically made for hamsters. An aquarium can not only be stuffy, but fumes from the cedar chips can accumulate, and 'cause your hamster to become ill or maybe even worse.

Aquarium Cage for Hamsters is the same Aquarium for Fishes. It serves a very nice home for hamsters with enough space to run around. No 2nd levels though, but with a hanging ladder with toys attached to it, or a hanging mat would be a great fun for your hammy. Get him a wheel with suction at the back. I know of one good wheel from HabitraiL. Very light andquiet. Safe & ColorfuL.
another advanatge for aquariums is, you can watch your pet in his activities. It provides great fun for you too.

about ventilation, the almost-all-holes on the cover provides enough. If you are doubtfuL, face the fan near it so more air gets inside. Though you dont really need to.

Njoy your hammy!

Instead of using a regular hamster cage you just buy a large aquarium with a Screen Top on it of course( they need air) and use it for a cage !! You can see through the glass and its fun watching them, and you make them a nice home in it instead of the wire type cage ! If that is what you perfer? Alot of times they can exscape from a wire cage , they chew there way out, but aqu. that can't chew out of ! and they can't climb up the walls of the glass to get out either !! unless you put a house in it thats tall were they can climb on and reach the top that way !

True that, aquariums can be really stuffy and *can* make the bedding toxic for your hamster. Think of how comfortable you would be in a small greenhouse. Ick. Whenever possible, I always use a cage. A clean environment with good circulation is the key to keeping a small animal healthy.

Yep, that's a glass tank and just can be used for hamsters. It must have a wire lid because of good ventilation. I have one hamster in a aquarium and it works good.

just a cheap fish aquarium, depending on the height of the tank you might not need a top cover as hamstes dont have much of a verticle, but be careful like mice they are masters at the art of escaping from their cage

Basically a fish tank without a lid.

But rodents don't do well in aquariums, there isn't enough ventillation, so please consider getting a regular cage for your hamster.

Have you ever heard of an aquarium?

The glass thing you keep pet fish in?

Well, instead of fish, you keep your hamster in it. They are pretty much escape proof, and you can see the little guy really well.

Where did you hear it?

It would be a fish tank that has been converted into a home for a hamster! With maybe a wire or mesh cover...
