I will admit that I am overweight and besides walking around the workplace during the day, I really don't have time to exercise (yes walking around the workplace is not real work i know!) I know its bad to be overweight for a recent college grad, Im not obese as hell like Michael Moore, but Im not a toothpick ya know?

Im having a dillema between joining Gold's gym and joining a Rec Center with a pool. I prefer swimming laps because I use to be on the swim team as a kid and I like the water. But Im worried if I will not get the same benefits as working out in a gym.

My important goals are to:
1) Improve and have a good healthy heart rate
2) Lose weight and stay in shape
3) Gain some muscle

Swimming is probably the best and most effective workout I've ever had. It works the whole body, cardio as well as muscles that you probably wouldn't use if just lifting weights or running. I would advise you take a swimming class if you haven't already so that you learn how to do the different types of strokes properly. This will help you use the right muscles and not hurt yourself in the process of your workout, and will give you at least one set time a week when you will be disciplined and get in the pool for a set amount of time (usually a half hour). Have fun!

I would say swimming is a good exercise. I swim for different reasons - for mobility and exercise. I went through college and lost weight in order to find a good job. I went from 450 to 250. Once I started working and married, I reallzed I was much happier being fat, obese or whatever you want to call a 550 plus man. I also married a lovely lady who likes me very fat and loves to cook. So exercise for me with swimming is to keep my health good, which it is despite my weight. I tried other activities - basketball, raquetball, treadmill - all of which were problematic at my current girth. With my size moving when gravity plays a large part is an issue and swimming works well for me.

Definitely, I lost 20 pounds during my freshman swim PE class, which was four weeks long for two periods during the year. That was a while ago, though and I've gained some of it back.

swim because itll help burn the fat you have and build muscle.
plus if you like doing it, your less likely to quit.
i would suggest buying a treadmill and using it when you have time at home. its nice/rewarding to see on the screen how many calories you burned instead of guessing.

Absolutely. It is energetic exercise, and will do both quite nicely. Go for the pool.
