When i got my tattoo done, i wasn't allowed to wet it or go in direct sunlight for a week. Then i had to keep applying Pawpaw ointment for that week, or until it healed properly. The BIG NO NO is not to scratch at it at all, with can cause infections.

wash with antibacterial soap , like dial, in about an hour after your tattoo is finished. Pat dry with clean, disposable towel. Let tattoo heal naturally for 24 hours while washing 2 times a day. after the first 24 hours apply a nonscented lotion 3-5 times daily very lightly. Working the lotion into the skin completely. I would recommend Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion. I also make an all natural tattoo aftercare product we sell in the shop. Whatever you choose go lightly with it. And your artist was bad, whoever they were should have given you aftercare instructions.

your tattoo artist isnt very professional if he did not give you aftercare instructions-be wary, people on here will mislead you with improper instructions but i am a body piercer who has worked among tatt artists for a long time and im also married to one!
1-after you get home from the tatt shop-remove bandage or covering and wash gentley with dial liquid soap and warm water.Do not rub it hard be gentle!
2-For the first 3 days apply *THIN* layers of A&D ointment bacatracin or tattoo goo.Gentley wipe off excess ointment with a paper towel-dont just lather your arm up.too much ointment can suffocate the tattoo!
3-On the fourth day stop using the ointment and switch to a non-scented (no fragrance) lotion like Eucerin or Curel and applying thin amounts 3 times a day or when the tattoo seems dry.
4-Keep out of sun-tanning beds-do not soak-no salt water or chlorine !

I totally agree with Star. Your tattoo artist should have told you all of what you need to do! wash it gently in circular motions with liquid soap. pat dry with a paper towel. apply a thin layer of A&D ointment 3x a day for 3 to 4 days. Then on 5th day apply unscented lotion to tattoo! keep washing it with the same soap. you should be fine. The things you should look out for are red and tenderness around the area and yellow to green discharge. If you see any of that, Get to a doctor as soon as you can, it's an infection. Be careful stay safe and you'll be fine!

Bscitracin will make your body force it out. Use a+d ointment, it keeps it from drying out and helps with the bad a** itch you're gonna have in about 48 hours.
