OK, John Browning designed the 1911 for .45acp, a big powerful slow caliber. Browning is possibly one of the greatest firearm designers to have ever lived, and many of his designs are still in use today almost a century later.

It was adopted by the U.S. and over the next decade many of the shortcoming of the design were noted by Browning. Some were corrected in later manifestations of the 1911, some were not. He himself was very critical of his creation and noted many things that he should have done differently.

In the early 1920s, Browning was working with his lifelong partner, Fabrique Nationale, a Belgian arms manufacturer, when he was asked to design a military and police pistol around the smaller and faster 9mm Parabellum round, which was becomming very universal for military and police use.

The result was unquestionably one of the greatest pistols ever designed, one that really changed the way pistols work forever. This pistol became the standard the world over and in WWII, both Allies and Axis carried it.

It was so good, the Germans dropped the flawed Lugar system and made the P38 replacement like the Browning design.

Nearly every pistol made today owes some heritage to it, even modern double actions.

The pistol is the Browning Hi Power, also known as the P-35 or GP. It's called Hi Power due to the then large 13 round magazine. Later version magazines can hold 17 rounds.

So, with the best single action pistol ever designed available to you, the much improved Browning designed Hi Power which was made for 9mm, why would you even consider a 1911 dumbed down to 9mm?

Yes, Kimber makes 1911 chambered for 9mm. Look at the Custom II family and all of the other families listed on the Kimber site. Several of them of 9mm options available.

Yes, the Custom Aegis is one of them. I believe it's the third on the list of Aegis pistols on their main website.

They come with 8 or 9 round single stack 9mm magazines.

I don't really see the point in getting a 9mm 1911, but you can't go wrong with a Kimber.

yes they do have a 9mm.
i can understand why you would possibly want a 9mm over a 45acp or even a 40s&w being that the ammo is cheaper (if you don't reload)however i would NOT buy a kimber.
look into a sti, springfield, or a nowlin to name a few.
after being able to handle and fire many 1911's, I just don't like kimbers. there are so many better options out there.

They do make one, but why would you choose a shitty caliber over the .45?

Apparently we have some 9mm Lovers in the house. I would just like to say why I dislike this round. Because of its size and its speed, If you have to defend yourself with this round, you will need to shoot someone center-mass at least 3-4 times to slow them down, unless you are good enough to manage a head shot on a moving target. A few years back, there was a little known terrorist attack on an Air Force base in Qatar. A man with an AK-47 got out of his car and was advancing on the gate and the guard in it just spraying rounds with it. Now according to national law their the gate guard was not allowed to be armed however we could have mobile patrols inside the perimeter that were armed. Hearing the gun fire a SrA who was on foot patrol ran to the gate to defend his comrade inside it. He put 9 rounds of 9mm into the terrorist before the terrorist went down and stopped shooting. Now the 9mm is so small and fast and just does not create enough damage on impact to take someone down. This is also the reason why 99% of Police departments are now requiring a minimum of .40 for service pistols. Also the original 9mm luger round was not designed by the Germans to kill but to maim its intended target to cause the allies to waste logistics on field hospitals.
