So, my boyfriend and I have been dating for 16 months...not quite a year and a half, but still. We made it through his deployment, and I've never been this serious with anyone before. He's mentioned forever, and well - both of us know it's going to happen eventually....Anyway, he constantly jokes about disciplining children - "smack them across the face, that'll make them listen" - or if we're watching a show and the man is always coming in late, he'll say "Hopefully he's having an affair." I used to laugh, but now that we're becoming more serious, it bothers me....i dont want to marry someone who has those opinions....and today, after he said those things, i told him why it bothered me....and he laughed....now I cannot stop thinking about how he laughed about forever....in my face, he laughed. Any suggestions? Or Advice...or anything?!

Get out!! If he laughs he is the same way as what bothers you - you dont want to marry someone who will make you miserable like that. He may make you happy in other ways buts its not worth it in the long run.
Try talking to him again and tell him you'll walk out the door if he can't be serious and listen up and if he laughs again - show him who will have the LAST LAUGH!!!

This is a very tricky situation. There are many possible scenarios: (1) He thought you were joking (2) He is joking when he says those things, and thought it was funny that you thought he was serious or (3) He disagrees and thinks that is the proper way to 'hold down the house'.

I would say that most likely the answer is #2, but without getting to know the guy I cant say with certainty. I think that (if you have the guts) you should ask him why he laughed. Dont butter him up, strictly as him straight up "Why did you laugh?". If the answer was #1 then he'll realize you werent joking, if the answer is #2 then he'll simply explain that he was joking the whole time and would never do those things and if (god forbid) the answer was #3 then...I honestly dont know what to tell you.

All in all, I highly doubt he was being serious.

All the advice i can think of is what my brother said. The first time you meet a guy is the nicest he'll ever be. So the way he's acting now isn't going to change. So, do you really want to spend the rest of your life with him? Put things into perspective for yourself.

That shows he doesn't take you or your opinions seriously.
He is talking about forever because he wants to see if you'll put up with his behaviour FOREVER. It is not going to change once you get hitched. Men don't change after marriage women do, to accommodate the man. Pay attention to how he ACTS when he is "relaxed" and says the above comments. All that forever bullshit is a smokescreen

Talk to him. Tell him that you aren't kidding. you are serious about having this conversation and making sure you are really on the same page about the relationship. If he really doesn't fit the description of the kind of man you want to be with FOREVER, walk away now before it gets any harder to.

You dont' want to be guessing the rest of your life...

When he says it, does he say it in a jokingly/sarcastic way? He sounds really insensitive.. and trust me, you dont want to be in a marriage with someone who isnt going to consider your feelings or just you in general.. I would definately have a talk with him and get to the bottom of this before the relationship goes any further.

tell him EXACTLY how you feel. if he laughs, then screw him. if he cant take you seriously now, imagine spending the rest of your life like that.

If that's how he really feels, you need a new man.
