Okay, 10 years plus in sales...thinking like the first poster here...that yes, the big money can be taking the ceiling off. Its advertising and a company I thought of starting myself. I have also owned a company - and that was work or starve...Just love the opinions here. :)

Generally, I advise that you always have a base salary.

However, since you have quite a bit of sales experience, and you considered this venture previously, it might be worth a shot. Just make sure to give it all you've got.

I know plenty of commission-only reps who make substantial amounts of money.

I'd say: Only if you truly have EXPERIENCE!!!!! I have had several positions in 100% commission only positions. Some, sound like "WOW!!, great opportunties!" And, you believe in yourself enough that you know you can do it; however, the opportunity turns out to be a DUD! Of course, because only the small fraction of the people that succeed either got "lottery" lucky or they had solid experience in the ups and downs. Of course, you can do what you want and be successful!! Try something FIRST that will, at least, pay you a base salary (even if it is small.). I have learned that unless you KNOW because, based on your real life WORK experience, you can go in there and blow the doors off, go somewhere that will, at least, make an investment in you and pay you a BASE salary!!!!!!!! If you are 1110% confident because of proven experience in either doing it or having connections, then dont' worry. Being that you are even asking the question: DON"T do it!!!!!

Depends on a lot of things. Car salesmen and real estate people work on commissions and do quite well.

YES> if it is YOUR OWN COMPANY. If you MUST work this type of job-check out the background of this company AND consider it YOUR COMPANY while working there-that way, mentally, physically, you take ownership and work harder.
For your sake-I hope it os not vacuum cleaners or some multi-level scam
