Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals, decorations, and awards should be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the veteran served. However, for Air Force (including Army Air Corps) and Army personnel, the National Personnel Records Center will verify the awards to which a veteran is entitled and forward the request with the verification to the appropriate service department for issuance of the medals.

The Standard Form (SF 180), Request Pertaining to Military Records, is recommended for requesting medals and awards. Provide as much information as possible and send the

Generally, there is no charge for medal or award replacements. The length of time to receive a response or your medals and awards varies depending upon the branch of service sending the medals.

Your father has a discharge document called a DD form 214 which serves as a summary of his military service. It will list all of his awards and decorations. If he does not have this form he or his next of kin can request a copy of it from the National Archives.

All awards and decorations except for the medal of honor and the various service crosses (Like the Navy Cross) can be replaced from private vendors. Good luck in your search

If Im not mistaken he should be able to contact Department of the Navy and handle it through personnel- or he should at least have kept a copy of his orders awarding it which he can use to get copies if they are that high of an award, but you can pretty much pick up some higher awards at the clothing and sales on post--- what with the war and all, and as a vet he should have post privileges.

Since it seems the first part of your question has been answered, allow me to move on. There are several companies that will mount and frame your fathers awards in a very nice shadow box frame. You can find them on-line. Just remember to include his rifle (and pistol if he qualified) badge in the frame. His qualification level can also be found on his DD214. If you need any help tracking down a place that offers this service, feel free to e-mail me and I will be more than happy to help.

You can go to the national archives and request a copy of your dads DD-214 and military records.

His military decorations will be listed on his DD-214.

Then you can go online and buy replacement medals.

Link to the national archive webpage to request military records is below.

EDIT: Your dads DD-214 will list his military decorations, then all you have to do, is buy replacements.

A simple internet search will show you where to but them.

While you're waiting to get his official medals back, you could go to an Army-Navy surplus store and get the ribbons that go with his medals. You know, the little colorful military pins that he wore above the left pocket of his uniform.
