I think a large part of it is the fact that our belief system is so different from others. Other religions at least believe in some higher power that will hold them accountable. We don't feel there is anything to believe in.

Another thing is that since we don't follow the bible, Koran, etc, which all discuss ways to live good, happy, peaceful lives, we are automatically evil people who don't know how to live moral, ethical lives.

I think one of the reasons that negative stereotyes abound can be blamed on the outspoken attitude by some atheists display of not only being condescending, but openly hostile to religious people. Take LuckyJohn19 there. I respect his believe, or lack thereof, but he doesn't respect mine. He is arrogant and self-righteous.

Unfortunatly most Atheists (at least the ones I've met) keep their opinions and beliefs to themselves or their very small circle of friends, and the rest of only hear the filth people like LuckyJohn19 and his contemporaries spew.

Cos the simple minded Theists believe in the InvisibleSkyPixie and resent we Atheists who see it for the scam that it is.
I think they also resent the courage they think we have that we would even take the risk that the Pixie is nothing but a mythological beast invented by parasites who gull the gullible outa their money.
Most of them choose to believe because they haven't got the courage not to.
They fear THE POSSIBILITY OF THERE BEING A HELL so much they're willing to trade their life's freedom for the perception of safety.

I have nothing but pity for the empty-headed fools who believe there's a Pixie in the sky who watches EVERYTHING they say, think and do, 24/7, whilst continuously whispering at them: You'd better SUCK up to me or I'll send you to hell for Eternity.

There's really good money to be made from religion IF you can keep a straight face.

Probably because so many of them come off acting as if they were superior to the average person, and it is annoying.
You know how you feel when a Christian tells you you are going to hell for not believing as we do?
Well, that is exactly how we feel when we are told that our beliefs are fairy tales....

As with all stereotypes, there is some truth to them. Otherwise they wouldn't be in existence.
