In a survival situation, how could you tell if a fish is poisonous?

If a fish has both fins and scales, it is safe to eat. Some fish with only one (such as shark) may be eaten without being poisoned but if you cannot tell one fish from the next, follow what the bible says is acceptable (fins and scales). Even the lifeboat manuals during WW II included this as a guide for sailors who had to abandon ship.

One way might be to put a little bit of it in your mouth and see if you feel a burning sensation or something. But I don't know, it might be dangerous.

But the best precaution against this would be (if possible) to research on the wildlife in that area and see which species you can eat or must avoid. Check survival guides or something.
