The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. If you've read it, what are your thoughts?

I'm only on Day 5 and already feel useless and not very positive.

I think the book means well, but it's not necessarily an accurate reflection of God's heart. Formulas and methods do not work for everyone, and the book may not be what God is using to speak to you, and that is why you are getting discouraged.

Don't worry, I would suggest just putting down the book for a little bit, and praying to your Father in Heaven. He knows what you need to feel uplifted, positive, satisfied, and excited about the life He has given you. He is also perfectly capable of speaking to you about your purpose in life without a book. Open your heart to Him, share all your doubts, fears, anxieties, and He will speak back to you. Trust me, He speaks to me all the time about my purpose, and even though it's been a hard road, it's worth it to hear the true voice of the Father. Seek Him with all your heart, and He will make your paths, and your "purpose," straight. :-) God Bless you!

Warren mixes in some of Carl Jung's Psychology in The Purpose Driven which is not needed for a person of faith. Read the Bible. All the truth you need is there. Some people have asked, " What or who is driving the Purpose Driven?" Is it God? , Money? or something else? I started to read it ,went about 1/3 thru and was not impressed. All you need is the love of God in your heart, realized by your faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. Trust Jesus. You don't need any of man's Psychology, especially from an atheistic shrink like Carl Jung, sweetened with the Gospel, to be a good Christian. Don't waste your time.

Rick Warren is a good pastor, and I agree with about 60 percent of what I've heard him preach.

I couldn't read The Purpose Driven Life -- his selective use of scripture was too distracting, and the translations weren't very good. (Turns out this was a common complaint.)

He's too far to the right for me on many issues, and yet his Biblical foundation has a loose, "California" feel too it.

So, my problems with him, and his book, span the entire spectrum.

I believe that parts of it are ok- but be careful- it seems to emphasize more on what you can do, then what God has done. Granted we are all to find what God has for us to do, however, we can never forget that it is God doing it through us. Sometimes I think Warren used translations of scripture that were not entirely correct. Read it for what it is worth, but as I said before there are things I do not agree with.

I'm listening to Dr. David Dyer now on PBS & he spoke about the book you're referring to.

I'm now intrigued so I'm getting Purpose Driven Life tomorrow.

It would be a good book, but too many churches are teaching from this book instead of the Bible..not good....

The number one thing wrong is he plugs his other books too much, through out this book...

There is hardly any reference to the Holy Spirit.

Instead of giving you the actual scripture,,he puts things in his own words....

I think his heart is in the right place,,,but this book is not worth all the hype it gets..there are better books out there.

I've read it and loved it and it truly brought me closer to the Lord. Our entire church read it during the same time and we broke into small groups to discuss what we'd read each week. I have to say it was a major turning point for myself and my husband in our walk with Christ as well as many in our church. Our church had a deeper sense of community after reading the book. As the poster above mentioned, definitely do the homework that goes with it. I hope you enjoy it and are as blessed as I was by reading it! :)

A very traditional Christian suggested I pick it up and follow the teachings. I was bored. It represented control and stagnancy to me.

Go read something fun like The Celestine Prophecy.

It's a piece of crap, using whatever bible translation suits his 'purpose' (which I think is to make money). Put the book down, and back away.

Work on a process driven life instead.

I've enjoyed it. It gives hope to those who will trust God. Similarly Jesus said He came to save the lost, to call sinners to repentance. Self righteous people will not understand His message.
The book is good, but nothing can replace prayerful meditation and study of the Bible.
