Ok, I am a bit of a computer dunce, so please bear with me.
Our computer crashed the other day and I lost everthing on the hard drive.
I had my resume backed up to disk, but because Word has been updated on the computer (to Wordpad) it seems to have trouble reading/formatting it......te text and bullet points and stuff come up as mumbo jumbo, at least at first, but then looks normal after a few secs. I'm worried about how it will look to an employer when they open it. Are you able to update it or format it? I no longer have the old Word on the computer.
Ahh, hope this makes sense.
Thanks heaps in advance.

If you would send it to an employer in it's original format, most likely it's listed as a .doc , thats is what Microsoft Word documents are, and the employer opened it in Microsoft Word, everything would look normal to them.

Word puts its own header/document info and formatting codes in there, so that is the garbage you see at the top of the file.
Wordpad can display most of it with no problem, but if you have the backup file, take it to another machine with Word (or WordPerfect) and open it to make sure it looks OK. You will want to open it on a machine with the same version of Word or later. If you open it in WP, you may be prompted to convert it.

I would not recommend sending your resume as a Word document to an employer. You do not know what fonts they may have on their computer and your document may not look correct regardless of what version of MS Word or how you save it.
If you use only Times New Roman, Arial, or standard windows font then you are pretty safe - but your resume might look really boring.
The only safe way to send an electronic version is to convert the Word file to a .PDF file.
Why not print it on very good paper, make sure it is perfect, and then mail it?

Wordpad is NOT an update. It is a stripped down version of Word usually included with Windows and is actually a downgrade. If you can get the documents looking decent and resave, you should be set. If the weird looking part stays, you may have to edit those portions.
If you have a new version of Word, that will handle it just fine.

You will need to reformat the resume then save it again. Just to be safe. If you had a newer version of word not wordpad then you shouldnt have a problem go to the library and do it there.

Wordpad is NOT an upgrade of Word, more like a serious downgrade
You need to reinstall Word.

Most of employers use WORD.
So you might want to try get your Word back and save as the Word format (.doc).

Perhaps you could try to download and use MS Word Viewer to see it first, if you worry about the appearance.
