Signs it could be infected are if the skin around the pierced area are red and swollen.
If it hurts, to touch or move it (you've only had it for a few days so of course its going to hurt a little, but you know your own pain)
A yellowish discharge that smells coming from the piercing itself.
Me and everyone else could tell you to clean it or even what to put on it, but your best bet is to go see ur doctor... They will help you in whatever it takes to heal the piercing... Most importantly don't keep touching it... Many people play with their piercing because its new... But your hands carry a lot of harmful things, so keep them away as much as possible!
Don't wait too long, getting it taken care of, now is the best way to save your piercing!
Good luck!

My suggestion would be to find an unscented and clear antibacterial soap (or any piercing antibacterial stuff that the piercer gave you) and gently wash/rinse your piercing in your morning shower and before bed. It's normal for there to be irratation in the first few days, and minor infections aren't uncommon for belly button piercings. Just make sure you use something that's antibacterial and doesn't have any scents that could irritate the piercing (you just put a hole in yourself, give it a break!) ;-)
If it gets too painful, lasts a paticularily long time or if you're just a little bit nervous, don't forget that you can always check in with the piercer and/or your doctor, both should be able to offer you some helpful advice.
Just whatever you do, don't take out the piercing when it's infected! Wait until it's healed! I know it's most people's first impulse, but the last thing you want to do is trap an infection inside your body by letting the skin heal over!

If it is hot to the touch and red it could be infected. You should clean it with hydrogen peroxide and/or rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol will sting, but it will kill germs very well. You should be sure to clean the whole area, as much inside the hole as possible and the entire ring itself.
You should continue cleaning it like this several times a day. You can also treat it with some Neosporin, Bacitracin, or some other kind of antibiotic ointment that you can get in any pharmacy.
If you notice a foul smelling discharge, especially if it is yellow or green in color, streaks on the skin moving away from the area or if you have a fever you should see a doctor.

It's going to be sore for a bit, especially there. If it's only been 4 days don't worry too much yet. If it has a really bad odor or is oozing in an odd way then you should worry. Don't use peroxide or rubbing alcohol on it, it will dry it out and irritate it more. Soaking it with sea salt helps alot. Put it in a small cup with water and let it soak on it for a few mins each day. I have mine done twice and they were the worst healing of all of them. You just have to be patient but if you still have your doubts, go to the doctor or go back to where you had it pierced. DON'T TAKE IT OUT!! If it is infected you could trap the infection inside your body. Wait until you get it looked at and have them take it out.

have you been messing with it? that can cause irritation, have you been keeping up with the up keep? if not thatll cause irritation and can lead to infection. sounds like it is an irritation maybe if got pulled? i dont know but i dont think from what you describe it being an infection, but if you want to be safe, which is always best w/ piercings, go to your doc

Clean it with antiseptic and keep an eye on it for any bump like blister or puss oozing out.
But if it's that bad now..better take it out and see a doctor....hope you went someplace that didn't re-use needles...if not then better start on aids and hepatitis testing soon.
