you got it. it is based on a per share basis. always reinvest your dividend so those shares grow. it is silly to take the payment unless your are desperate

Yes, it is on a per share basis, so the more shares you have the more in dividends you get. Depending on the stock they may have a DRIP (Dividend ReInvestment Program) where instead of getting the actual cash, you get more shares of that stock.
