How far along is she? Better yet, do you or your friend know when she was mated? You can figure out the due date within a few days of it by knowing what day she was mated.

If she is very close to giving birth, she will stop eating. Usually within 24 hours of the first pup being born.

She will also "cry" or whine, moan or be a bit more aggressive. She is probably having contractions and they are very painful.

You can check her vagina for swelling or a bloody and mucusy "show" as well but sh will usually keep herself clean so it may be difficult to tell. You can gently insert only the tip of a Q-tip and see if there is any of this show on it. That is an imminent sign of labor.

Monitor her closely. Is she seems to be in a lot of distress then please take her to the nearest emergency vet. I would recommend calling and locating one now if you haven't already lined one up just to make them aware of the situation and that you might be bringing her in.

Maltese are very small and occasionally have difficulty whelping since they have very narrow birth canals. Was she mated with another Maltese? If she was mated with a do that was larger than her, if she was in her first heat when she was mated or if she is carrying a large litter, she will probably need some professional assistance and possibly a C-section.

Set her up with a whelping box such as a decent sized laundry basket or box that doesn't have really high sides. Line it with an old blanket or some old towels. You can also give her a warm water bottle that can ease the pain a bit.

Keep her calm and as comfortable as possible. Please call the vet and make them aware of the situation. They may want to see her just as a precaution. If they find she is progressing normally then they will probably allow her to birth at home where she is more comfortable.

I hope this helps

Dogs are pregnant a very short time. About 2 months. You do not say if she was pregnant by another maltese or how far along she is. In any event if any dog is crying, possibly in pain, or not eating, your friend should take her dog to the vet to find out what the problem is. It is not uncommon for maltese to be in need of a c-section delivery by their veterinarian. Better to be safe than take the risk of losing an animal you love.

Sound like she needs a Vet check. Not eating and crying is not a healthy sign. I rescued a little 4lb Yorkie that came in to the shelter as a "stray." She was so pregnant that when you touched her abdomen, she would scream. She wouldn't eat and stopped drinking. The shelter did an emergency C-section and found 4 pups that were from a much larger breed dog... Needless to say, the pups were no where near full term and sadly, were lost. Does your friend know who the Father is? Regardless, she needs a Vet check if you want to have a healthy litter of pups.

She could be in labour but unable to give birth, she might need a c-section, if she isn't near due for the pups to be born yet, then not eating and crying are both not good signs. She needs a vet immediatly. A good rule for pregnant pets is pretty much the same as a pregnant woman. If your sister or something wasn't eating and was always crying you would make a doctors appointment... same goes for pets.

If she has stopped eating, she should be ready to give birth soon. If she is crying, something is wrong. Get her to a vet quick! before either she or the puppies she is carrying dies.

she could be in labor. When is she due to have the pups. But the crying could mean she is having trouble delivering the pups. Call a vet to be sure.

Crying is not a good sign. She needs vet care as soon as your friend can get her there.
