It don't spend quite as much as the rest of the world but we are very close. We spend many times what any other country spends and one day we may in fact spend as much as all of the world combined if we continue to raise our defense budget like we have been for the last 20 years.

Probably. That shows how underfunded our European allies are in NATO when it comes to defense budgets. Since the U.S. provides the bulk of troop lift capability, by air or sea, the Europeans have been getting a bargain for over sixty years. While the European member states of NATO pat themselves on the back for the Kosovo operation, the sad fact is that the U.S., Canada and Great Britain provided 90% of all combat air missions.
The literati and academics of other nations may think the U.S. is spending too much on defense. But, when it hits the fan they are glad we did spend that money.
