This all depends on how much you want to spend. I just bought a set of Maxfli's off ebay today. They appear to be a demo set, but I spent just over $100 including shipping. I would suggest buying a newer set, even if it isn't a name brand. The technology seems to improve every couple of years. Plus if you get frustrated and quit, your not out that much money.

The price will vary depending on the quality of clubs you want. Honestly, the best thing to do is go into a pro shop and talk to a professional about what a new golf player should purchase for his first set. But, you can find great deals online at sites like overstock, onlinefitness, or 3balls. Or you could always buy a used set on ebay or craigslist or swarm for it at eswarm.

Get fitted for clubs and also visit demo days at local courses. Even a fitting may not give you all the answers. Getting to demo titleists, pings, taylor mades etc one right after another at demo day may give you a great idea of which way you want to go. I would then recommend you look at a site like www.genericclubs.com to see how much you may be able to save on a knock-off set. I got a knock-off ping 5-wood that performs EQUALLY well to my OEM ping3-wood. And a cost of 1/3 of the original.

Best advise I can give is get fitted for clubs, and try different brands out, alot of people have suggested callaway(which i agree) is a great brand of clubs, but also Adams has some really great clubs for a fraction of the price too.

My Ping's are awesome, they are very well built and forgiving. Plus they are fairly cheap.
