Entry level for engineers is in the mid 50 - 60 K range. You could eventually earn a larger salary but you may need to take the management track. You shuld start learning the business reasons for why devisions are made they way they are - sometimes the technologically best solution is not the best business solution. You should cultivate your "people skills" - learn how to be a team player if you're not one, and learn how to lead. And by lead I don't mean manage, I mean learn how to get people revved up about coming to work on whatever proect you're working on, learn how to build trust, - things we don't teach you in engineering school. Then get noticed by your management. Volunteer for "stretch assignments", find an older, well respected engineer to mentor you.

There's a lot you have to do to get the big bucks. It may also involve changing jobs a few times so you'd better be prepared to relocate. But unless you've invented the thing to replace the microprocessor (or equivalent), you're going to have to go into management to earn the big bucks quickly.

First, if you aren't already doing it, make contacts in school with people at all levels of academic achievement. The brains won't be the ones to go into business for themselves, it will be the C and D students, and they will be the ones who will be hiring you.

stop trying to become an engineer and learn how to go into business for yourself. Opportunities and information are all around you.

As an engineer you will work for a firm which will be the primary benefactor of your labor and intellect. You will work in a stress-filled environment and watch the axe fall all around you wondering when it will fall on you, and only after you are fired will they tell you, oh by the way, you may be interested in offering your services as a consultant (independent contractor), where you are the primary benefactor of your labor and intellect. Hpefully you won't die of the stress first.

Or submit to the stress of the firm environment, learn everything you can from everyone you work with. Make contacts among coworkers and competitors and clients, and When you are ready, not when they fire you, leave the firm and start your own firm of engineering consultants. Then hire the bright boys who are asking this question fifteen years from now. By the way, this option requires a carefully thought out plan of action. It won't happen by accident.

If you want to make that kind of money as an engineering salary - not by running a business or becoming an independent inventor - pick a field that deals with very high value-added products and become very good at your specialty. Back when I was playing biomedical products I did better than that as an electronics engineer. I knew mold designers, not normally what you'd think of as a high-pay mechanical engineering specialty, who were paid better. Comsat design is another example of a field where they 'do not bind the mouths of the kine that tread the grain'.

There aren't many engineers who actually do engineering work that make that kind of money. People don't go into engineering because they want to make tons of money. If you're only interested in the money aspect, you're wasting your time studying engineering. You should study business, get an MBA and after a few years of backstabbing and screwing people, you'll be on your way!
