I don't think life is a test. Life, as we know it on earth, is just a way for humans to learn emotions.
The Mormons believe that we, humans, were all spirits with God and before we came to earth we were in Heaven. Because we were in Heaven and didn't know anything different than that, then God saw this and it was not good. So in order for us to know we were happy, God sent us on Earth(the first being Adam) so we would learn sadness, anger, heartache, etc...so we would know true happiness and perfection when we return home.

Because He wouldn't know the outcome if it didn't happen. So if we were never tested, he would never know the outcome. Just because one knows the outcome of an event before it occurs does not mean that the event does not have to happen for the outcome to be known. (This is only one possible answer to this rather vapid question which I pulled off the top of my head after about 30 seconds of thought.)

Nothing in life is predetermined. God no more knows the outcome of our individual lives than we do.God has no idea what choices we will make. To think otherwise defies all logic and common sense.

Because the concept of god is just a projection of the human need to have a superparent for humanity. Parent's test children even when they already know what they're going to do.
Example, "johnny, would you rather have this chocolate bar for dinner, or this nice bowl of butternut squash?"

God knows the outcome but he likes to cheat (it's a little known habit He has). By the way don't ever play Her in Texas Hold'em either.

Good point. Maybe God is testing Itself. Who knows for sure what God is really doing?

If God didn't test us, how would he know if we had faith in him or not?
The Following quotes are by Rick Warren from his bestselling Book "The Purpose Driven Life"
-"God tested Abraham by asking him to offer his son Isaac."
-"Adam and eve failed there test in the Garden Of Eden"
-"God continually tests people's character, faith, obedience, love, integrity and loyalty."
-"Character is both developed and revealed by test, and all of life is a test."
-"God constantly watches your response to people, problems, success, conflict, illness, and disappointment."
-" You will be tested by major changes, delayed promises, impossible problems, unanswered prayers, undeserved criticism, and even senseless tragedies."

Because God gave us all the gift of free-will and therefore does not know for certain what we will do with this gift. God's highest hope is that we will use our free-will to rise in concsiousness to the point we understand that we are one with him and one with all life.
However, on this planet most humans have not made the choice but choose instead to outpicture a lesser identity.
Yet at any moment any one of us can choose to return to God by walking the spiritual path.

the test isn't for Gods benefit but for ours
rather like saying 'whats the point in going weight training? the weights are the same weight after you have finished'
the point is that YOU get honed and toned by the process
