Maurice, most atheists would find the idea rather nonsensical.
Does the idea of a fat man in a red suit who flies around in a sleigh drawn by reindeer offend you?
Here's what happens. You seem to believe that everyone really does believe in God, just as you do. This is very human. You surround yourself, as most humans do, with people who share your views. Consequently, it is inconceivable to you that other people may believe other things.
Most Americans are shocked when, upon arriving in England, they find people driving on the "wrong" side of the road, but they soon become accustomed to it and it seems like the natural thing to do. When they return to the States, they have to adjust again.
Try to spend a few hours a week with people who don't think the way you do. It will broaden your horizons.

have you ever been friends with a "non-believer"? Would you let yourself be? I dont think you would. Doesnt that belittle Gods love? You offend god just as much because if he can love "us" then what right do you have to question us and talk down to us? i have met many horrible self centered and selfish contradicting christians but i have met many more non judgmental compassionate and giving aethiests

The idea of a living deity doesn't offend me as each person is entitled to their own delusion..
People preaching and trying to bring me into their delusion offends me greatly especially when they do not understand and accept the simple words "No Thank You, I am not interested."
So it is not the idea of a deity that offends but those who feel it is their right , duty and obligation to force their idea of a deity down my throat that offend..

I'm not offended by God. Just his fan club.
Actually the idea of an omipotent, benevolent deity doesn't "offend" me. It just seems like a silly and especially useless idea, on several levels: I can find peace of mind, purpose in my life, awe, and reasonable explnations for the world around me without introducing the notion of invisible friends.

It offends my sense of reason. It's not logical for there to be an invisible god who loves us and allows bad things to happen to good people. It's not logical for a living god not to make himself known (physically...not in imaginary voices and signs) to his believers. Just one miracle would be all it would take. Yet he denies us that. Therefore, he cannot exist because if he did...he would be evil to do all those things and a loving god cannot be evil. Therefore he does not exist.

I don't believe its a matter of offending, I think its fear. Fear of taking the responsibility of their choices and actions. By denying God, they feel that they don't have to be justified in what they do.
As a Christian, would you do things differently if you believed that God said it was ok? Like gay marriages, idol worshiping, stealing, lying, cheating and so on? You see God holds US accountable so we strive not to do those things and follow His word and ways.
But by denying God and His word, they don't have to be accountable, that is until the end when they WILL know the truth.

About as much as the idea that a Leprechaun leaving you a pot of god at the end of the rainbow offends you.
Does it? How much?

Poor spelling and grammar offends me more than your belief in a living God.
But if that is the I.Q. of a religious fundamentalist, preach on!
