The best answer ever given to this question is probably that of Saint Paul in I Corinthians 13. In a nutshell, love is caring about someone else as much as, if not more than, yourself. There are many forms of love: the love of parents for their children and children for their parents .. physical love, romantic love, the love of spouses in a long-term relationship "till death do us part", love of country, love of humanity.

Physical desire is not enough to make a love relationship endure. There must also be shared interests, a shared philosophy of life. As Irene says in John Galsworthy's novel "To Let": "Admiration for beauty and the desire for possession are not love, Jon. If yours were another case like mine -- where the deepest things are stifled, the flesh joined and the spirit at war!"

Its thinkin more about another person more than you do yourself. Its about wanting them happy even if it makes you unhappy. Its putting them before yourself and feeling good about it.
