Go to a beauty supply store that also sells to the (unlicensed) public and ask a cosmetologist for a conditioner especially for permed hair. Permed hair is especially fragile and needs the best of care.

Conditioner adds moisture and shine to the hair and neutralizes shampoo. When you have a perm using a light conditioner once and while is fine. But if you use it to often it will start to weigh down the curls and they dont be as bouncy. I would suggest using a little of light conditioner once or twice a week and no more than that. You dont want it to build up.

You're not supposed to use it for a few days after the perm. After that it's perfectly fine. Get one that says for permed hair though. I couldn't get a comb through my hair if I didn't use conditioner.

You NEED to use a conditioner!! Your hair is chemically treated therefor needs moisture. If you are worried about weighting it down use a voluming shampoo and conditioner. As far as build up goes...a GOOD SALON QUALITY PRODUCT WILL NOT LEAVE BUILD UP.
