The uniform colors offers the jail officers to quickly identify different classification levels of the inmates. At my agency, we use the basic classification levels of Minimum, Medium, and Maximum. Added on to this are Disciplinary, High Risk (both escape and assaultive), Protective Custody, and Work Force/Work Release. Neither of the inmates are allowed to associate with inmates of the other custody levels due to contraband control, threats of violence, and also co-defendants. We do not have separate colors for female inmates. They are not allowed contact with male inmates.

Orange - Outside trustee
Blk/White Stripe - Inside trustee
Green - Regular inmate
Red - High Risk
Tan - Females
Yellow - High Risk Females

All jail facilities have their own color system.
