Vegemite is a staple food here in Australia. It is delicious and nutritious but I can see how it may be viewed by foreigners who haven't grown up eating it. Like one answerer said, it has to be spread thinly...not extra thick as some overseas people I know have done. And on fresh white bread with real butter...mmm mm mmmmm. What a treat.

I'm from California and I tried Vegimite when I went to an Education Abroad orientation. The girl in charge had been to Oz and she explained that it's best if eaten as a thin layer on a dry cracker.
So I tried it. Not terrible...but I wouldn't eat a lot of it. In fact, smooth and creamy peanut butter would win over Vegimite any day!

Have you tried vegimite on toast with weet-bix?
Seriously lol, I have been eating my vegimite like this for over 15 years. Try two weet-bix with milk, cream and sugar (I prefer to eat my weet-bix cold) and two vegimite on toast.
Note: Dont spread the weet-bix all over the toast otherwise it will get soggy!, Spoon a mouthful of weet-bix at a time on the toast before you eat it.

Promite is too sweet. They used to put "Too Much Spoils the Flavour" on the Vegemite lid. I'm not terribly fond of it and never have been but it's OK spread thinly on buttered bread with some fairly strong cheese. It goes well on toast and can be used in gravy or stews in small amounts to darken them.

I tried it when I was over, the first time I made the mistake of putting too much on and found it digusting. I was advised to put less on and it wasn't bad, but wouldn't be my first choice to put on bread, bit too strong of a taste.

I think the main reason a lot of people don't like Vegemite is because they spread it too thickly on their bread. Like you would peanut butter or Nutella.
With Vegemite less is more.
It's great with really fresh white bread and thick butter and just a scrapping of Vegemite.

I'm from the US, and I found it to be bitter and not too appealing- rather like unflavored tahini. But I guess if it's associated with happy childhood memories, I could see where it might have grown on you.
