I will be moving to the Los Angeles area for about a year (maybe less) from the Midwest. I'll be working in the Valley, but plan on spending a lot of time on the beach. Would it be better for me to live in Burbank (close to work) or somewhere around Santa Monica (close to my hobbies)? How long is the commute? I'll be so grateful for any input!

I'm very fond of both towns, but I expect you'd be happier living closer to work. I've lived in Burbank and I loved it there. The rent will be cheaper than Santa Monica. And it's easier to feel motivated to spend time in traffic if it's for some fun than if it's for your daily drive to and from work.

When I lived in Burbank (last year) I found the traffic in town to be very tolerable, there's a nice downtown that's actually walkable, some nice parks, and awesome Porto's Bakery. I commuted to my job downtown, and it usually only took me a 1/2 hour. I still drove into Hollywood & Santa Monica frequently for fun.

I have lived in Glendale, Burbank, and Santa Monica. Glendale and Burbank seem safe enuff. Both are hot; much hotter than Santa Monica. Excellent living areas in both cities, lovely homes, and apt area. Glendale might have the more upscale shopping areas. Went to school in Glendale, good schools. I liked to live in all three cities, mebbe Santa Monica has the edge. Best luck.

I would say live in Santa Monica. The drive from Santa Monica to the Valley is only about 10-15 minutes longer than the drive from Burbank. Santa Monica is close to LA, has great beaches, and is a great place to live.

The weather is much better in Santa Monica (unless you hate fog and love heat), and I think Burbank is awfully drab compared to Santa Monica, but the commute from Santa Monica to Burbank would be just terrible.

Santa Monica is a nice beachside community and Burbank is very commercialized and business-oriented. I sometimes drive down to Santa Monica/Malibu from the Valley, so the commute is probably around 45 minutes +.

Santa Monica would be a better place to live if you don't mind the drive. You'll enjoy it so much better. What people say around here is that if you move from the Valley to the beach, you'll never move back.

Lets cut to the chase. Santa Monica is a much more friendly and cool place to live but the Commute would drive you nuts. You are going to have to live in the Burbank area. But... that does not mean that you have to live in Burbank. Try Sherman oaks, Studio City or the area around Universal city. There are lots of different communities here and you need to do a little exploration to find out what suits you best.

The thing about Sherman Oaks is that it is right by the Sepulveda pass which you need to go through to Santa Monica.
You can always live on the other side of the pass as well. The UCLA campus area would be ideal. Lots of entertainment and a great neighborhood. A little pricey but there are apartments that cater to the college crowd so they are more reasonably priced. Have fun!

It is MUCH better to live closer to work. You will spend most of your day and night on the 405 freeway if you choose to live in Santa Monica and work in Burbank (I would LOVE to live by the beach...but it's not practical.) Burbank is very nice to live in.
