Get some books on God and spirituality. The Catholic thinkers are the best IMO. Read the last 5 chapters of the Gospel of John. Then read John's epistles (John 1, and 2). Then think about what you read.

Part of the problem is that you might be listening to the nincompoops who try to say that everything in the bible is 100% true, just like a history or science book is true. Baloney.

The bible was never meant to be a history or science book. The truth the bible holds is way, way beyond just history or science. There is truth in the bible, and you don't have to believe all the stories and narratives. Read those parts I mentioned and then give them some thought, like a few weeks of thought. Find some quiet time when you can and think about what you read.

I know priests and other spiritual leaders are getting a bad rep in the news nowadays, but there really are some wise and holy people out there to talk to. Try to find one and ask him/her to be your spiritual director.

And if you still don't believe, relax. You don't have to talk like a glassy-eyed fundamentalist to get into heaven. :)

Christianity came about 400 years after Jesus' death. Bits and pieces of the bible floated around up until it was compounded into a book form.
Don't let the Christian movement steer you away from God, a God does exist. Beliefs before Christianity was around much longer than the male based religion. Mother Goddess was around for up to 7000 years in Greece, 4000 years in the Middle East, and 6000 years in Germany.
A true religious belief would have male and female as equal, and today there is no religion that teaches that, this is why God is feeling so far out of reach to you.
Pray by asking to be shown spiritual truths, you will receive the answers you seek.

1. Continue to pray daily to God or Spirit or Reality or Heaven, or any other good name of Truth you like, for help as you live to continue to seek more love, mercy, good human service, truth, beauty and goodness.

2. Email me for the website of a free book that has helped to change the minds of many who started out as atheists or agnostics.

Why do you want to believe in God? Is it the idea of a higher power? Do you want to connect spiritually?
I'd say, 'redefine' God. Find out what it really means. Not the 'God made in the image of man' that's in the bible. That is truly hard to swallow.
Check out other religions (eastern) and Paganism, whatever one 'moves' you, learn from it. Get connected.
Good Luck

Take the time to read this excellent article that shows how you can believe that the Bible is of divine origin. And ask God to give you the faith to believe in an honest prayer. You can say something like "God, I don't know if I believe in you or in the Bible but if it's true then I want to believe, so help me to know the truth in Jesus' name, amen".

First, be logical. The universe was created by accident with a big bang? It's not logical to think that this complex universe was an accident. It's not scientific to think that this universe started from nothing. Once you realize that the only logical chioce for creation was a Greater Being, the rest is easy to believe.

The Bible was not written 70 years after Jesus died. I don't know where you heard that. I don't think atheists are weird.

All you can do is pray about it and ask God to help you know if it is true. Go to church. Talk to religious leaders and friends. they can help.

Personal proof does come from God, usually when you trust in him, standing by his side especially when everything is going wrong, and the devil is trying to confuse you in so many ways. Standing by God with faith, never giving up, trusting in Him for years sometimes, after God has teach you through experiences.... all of a sudden in some ways God is there to where you know it, He will allow you to know in some way giving you proof. But first there is many test that are allowed to test your spirit and faith.
Some will go through this easier than others for many reasons, we are all build up in different ways to do God's will.
Religion you do not have to be in to have a connection with God, just have Him in your heart. It's what's in your heart that pleases God. And He would send his angels and spirits to protect you.... I know this from experiences.
I hope you find the truth in your journey.

It you want to believe, then look for the truth that might have started that "game of telephone"...

But don't believe just to not be a weird atheist. Be who you are.

You don't need to read the bible to believe in God. There are many other theistic belief systems, or you could just conceive God in a way that makes sense to you.
