Try these: http://german.about.com and http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/

Both have German lessons, but the best thing, IMHO, is that both have sound files so you can learn the correct pronunciation. If you get stuck, just ask on Y!A; there are several people who really know German. (Just ignore all the answers that come from online translating sites!)

I was learning two foreign languages by reading books for children and Comics. Those you can buy on the web, indeed.
And of course you will need a thick, thick dictionary.
