"In colonial America, informal social controls in the home and community helped maintain the expectation that the abuse of alcohol was unacceptable. There was a clear consensus that while alcohol was a gift from God, its abuse was from the Devil. 'Drunkenness was condemned and punished, but only as an abuse of a God-given gift. Drink itself was not looked upon as culpable, any more than food deserved blame for the sin of gluttony. Excess was a personal indiscretion.' When informal controls failed, there were always legal ones.... The prohibition or 'dry' movement began in the 1840s, spearheaded by pietistic religious denominations, especially the Methodists. In the 1830s, most temperance organizations began to argue that the only way to prevent drunkenness was to eliminate the consumption of alcohol."

Why does the USA still try to ban the production and consumption of certain mind-altering substances, while heavily regulating others? People never learn.

simply by fact the government makes way too lots money from the taxes. in the event that they are in a position to get taxes for cyanide intake, that is criminal. And making a substance unlawful basically makes the priority WORSE! seem at prohibition, the conflict on drugs and Al Copone. do you choose extra of that? You CANT stop human beings from employing drugs no remember if its criminal or not! Outlawing alcohol will basically make the actual risky criminals extra useful and richer.

The American prohibition was primarily due to the widening use of the automobile by the American public. There were a lot of car crashes and fatalities due to drunk driving, (much like today).
Drinking was not seen as horribly dangerous when drunks only had horses to ride. Horses tend not to allow themselves to get in head-on collisions, no matter how badly you "drive" them. Once the drunks got cars, however, it quickly became obvious that there was a problem.
There had already been a women's temperance movement prior to the introduction of cars. However, they didn't get wide spread support until the American public started seeing a lot of drunken, fatal accidents.

That would be the Women's Christian Temperance Movement. They'd been working toward that goal for nearly a century before they finally got Congress to try it. Too bad they didn't read what the Bible actually says about alcohol.
Take a little wine for thy stomach's sake.
Drinking is fine by the Lord. It's getting drunk that is sinful.

That's the sort of response to social problems that the US and UK prefer - try to stomp everything and hope it will go away rather than deal with it.
Which is why both countries are one of two decades behind the Dutch. They got their balls from fighting the sea hundreds of years ago - and they won!

Christians convinced people that it would be a good idea. It didn't take long for everyone to learn otherwise.

It was noticed that people who were inclined to drink a great deal were apt to behave in enormously stupid ways.
