If you underwent surgery on active duty, any complications or limitations from that surgery are considered to be service-connected. So, you can file a claim for disability with the VA. If you are granted such an award of disability from the VA you are considered to be disqualified for further service.
If you are still on active duty, your case should be the subject of a report of medical board. If that board finds you are not fit for further duty, then the case is referred to your service's physical evaluation board for a determination of an award of disability.
The report of medical board can also recommend an appropriate period of limited duty in your case, with re-evaluation at the end of that period. During that period your physical profile will prevent a return to full duty.

I am no expert on this, and would need more information to give a proper answer, but I would strongly recommend that you speak with the local VA as soon as possible. If this was an injury you recieved on active duty, the military is responsible for your treatment. Be careful what you sign, because the military does not always look out for you. As for returning to active duty, that depends on the extent of your injury. I hope others step up to help you and thank you for your service.

NO! If doctors determine that you can return to duty. Then you are not disabled.
When you retire or leave active duty you can file for disability with the VA, but not before.
If they do not return you to duty status, then you will be given a disability rating by the Medical Board for that specific injury.
It will depend on how long you have been in and rating. They can either separate you with severance pay, Place you on TDRL, or Retire you.
