My son is 4 and our second son will be here any day now and he has taken it very well. Although it wasnt until my belly got bigger that i told him there was a baby in there. i also kept him very involved and hands on. He went to two of my doctors appts. and to the ultrasound where he than found out he was having a brother. I think four years is a great gap. My advice is to make ur child a part of the pregnancy and not ever let them feel left out. Like at both of my baby showers we bought my son gifts as well. And since there sharing a room we let him pick his own bedding to mach the babys bedding. All the little things help.

Baby brother was born 2 months before big sister's 4th birthday. I was early in the 2nd trimester (just before learning the sex) when we told her.
She was very happy about the whole idea (although she would have initially preferred a girl. 18 months later, she still really likes him and he totally worships her. If your older child is under 5 and you can stand Dora the Explorer, I recommend the DVD "Big Sister Dora".
A quick story about the older child understanding what's going on. A friend of mine (now in his late 40s) was about 4 when his mother miscarried. In an attempt to soften the blow for the older children, his parents got a puppy. His explanation, "All I knew was that she went to the hospital pregnant and came home not pregnant with a puppy." For y
years, he believed people could have puppies.

my first girl was exactly 18 months when i had the second one, there was no discussion of any sort between me and the big girl, she just saw the second girl when i came back from the hospital in the evening with the baby after leaving her in the house in the morning.
