i just got a femal dog who is around 2 we think and we realy want to know if she is spayed but we dont want to reopen her how can i tell if she is spayed or can i?

i just got a new dog who is around two i cant find a scar and i dont want to reopen here how do i know if she is spayed?

In our county (and most likely yours, too) a dog is marked with a small tattoo next to the incision that indicates to any veterinarian that sees her afterwards that she is spayed. This prevents unnecessary surgeries. Your vet will know. If you don't already have a vet, most will give a FREE first exam.
Also, your vet can do an external abdominal exam to see it your dog still has her uterus. If your vet is still not positive she will do an ultra-sound.

Usually there is a spay scar if the dog has been spayed but that's not 100% accurate since any abdominal surgery can have a scar and some dogs don't have obvious scars. It's just the most likely cause of an abdominal scar in a young female. The problem you'll run into is when you go to license her since Animal Control won't accept just the scar as evidence the dog is spayed - they want a spay certificate. This happened to us from a dog we adopted once. We called the humane society to find out what we could do and luckily they checked their records and as luck would have it she had been spayed there, so we were able to get a certificate. But that was dumb luck. Obviously if the dog never goes into heat, that's another indicator.

Its not always easy.
Sometimes the vet can find a spay scar but not always... I've had more than one purebred rescued dog from the pound be opened up and found the parts were already missing... boy we feel awful about that.
Although worse yet is the "spayed" dog who a private owner turns in to the rescue and miraculously she regrows a womb... sometimes a pregnant womb. Sometimes people just suck.

A female cat in heat is an annoying, inconsolable, noisy creature that will go into heat every month until she is spayed, or bred. If bred you will have a bunch of under foot fur balls running around you must find homes for. That last part is not as easy as the cute faces make you think. If bred she will go into heat cycles 4 to 6 months after birthing. If not spayed or bred the constantly changing hormones can lead to health problems late in life.

I agree with checking for a scar but many places (including the shelter I work at) are now using tattoo ink too, to double confirm it. When the animal is getting stitched up we put some of the ink along the incision so there is a nice little green line on the belly so we and other vets know for certain it is fixed.

There will be a scar on her belly. Dogs that have gone through at least 1 heat cycle have larger teets. Some scars are much smaller then others when they are spayed. You might be able to shave the area a bit yourself.

The different vets I have spoken to say the only way to be absolutely sure is to opne her up. Schedule a spay and if there isn't anything to be removed fine.
I have seen many with a "spay" scar that end up getting pregnant.
a hernia scar can often be mistaken for a spay scar.
So it's one of 2 chooices open her up or what to see if she comes into heat

Generally when dogs have been spayed they have a scar from the surgery, rub her belly and see if you can find one, generally they right in the middle of the stomach and would be vertical. (nose to tail)
Also, your vet should be able to tell if she has already been spayed.

the vet doesn't always know by looking. mry friend took her cat to the vet and the vet scheduled a spay, but then foun dout that she was already spayed once she opened her.
check for a scare....if u dont see one and the vet doesn't see one....u may just have to open her to find out..or wait till she has her cycle

Have the vet shave the abdomen. Usually a spay scar will be seen if they are spayed.
ALL MAMMALS HAVE NIPPLES!!!! Even MALES have nipples!!!! That is NO guide in telling if a dog is spayed or not!!!!!!
