Who said that it is supposed to provide comfort and peace? Sometimes the truth is painful. Also, there is no spirit. We live for life, not death.

I would much rather know that when I die there is nothing compared to living in "heaven" where you see your loved ones suffer down below and can't do anything about it.
I also truly do not NEED comfort and peace. I don't NEED an explanation for when I die. I see death as sleeping with no dreams. Not painful, not comforting. Nothing.

It doesn't comfort me because I don't need comfort. I know that life is temporary and I need to make the most of it here, now, with my loved ones and other humans, not rely on hearsay that some being who loves me exists and will comfort me.
I love my family and I will miss them when I'm gone, as I expect they will miss me, but we all know that we spent every minute loving each other and being good to one another, rather than counting the minutes until we die and can be reunited with others... and we can't even verify they exist somewhere to be reunited WITH.
If you need that comfort, more power to you for believing. However, please don't ascribe your same needs to me and others. My spirit and mind are comfortable with facts.

It doesn't. It's not comforting. Why should it be? Does reality exist to contort itself according to my wants and desires?
No, Maurice. It doesn't.
As Carl Sagan once wrote: For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Well, I'm an agnostic... which means I believe the existence of god can't be proved one way or another... but I'm more comfortable with being nothing after death than with living with some crazy tyrant who kills innocent babies and causes catastrophes killing thousands of innocent humans (hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis...). Honestly, if this whole god thing is true, I'd rather go to hell, and fight against such a tyrant.

Why do I need to be comforted with an afterlife? Why do I need a made-up story just to feel better about life and death? The first part is coming to terms with fate and the second part is just accepting it. "There's no love in fear,"

Because it enables me to appreciate the wonder of the life I'm living now instead of pretending that it's just the dress rehearsal. If you think of this life as some kind of second best, I pity you.

I find no comfort in an eternity living with, and continually worshiping, a god who is really nothing more than a bipolar terror who is prone to childish fits of rage.
Don't believe me? Read the Bible. He is a genocidal monster.

It doesn't comfort me but neither does it bother me. Why should it? I'll be dead anyway. Although death is a part of life, I've got better things to do than to think about it.

Maurice, for the umpteenth millionth time not all atheists believe that. Remember? I'm Buddhist, and essentially atheist.
